common questions
flow rates
The mōmi babypace® nipple is available in three flow rates.
Important:
Before using the nipple for the first time, clean it with the included cleaning tool, passing the tip of the tool through the opening of the nipple duct 5 - 10 times. This not only cleans the duct, but also establishes the nipple's correct flow rate. Watch the demo video here.
- late pre-term and full-term newborns
- exclusively breastfed babies up to 3 months old who are being introduced to a bottle for the first time (unless they are accustomed to nursing with a strong letdown)
- babies who have established feeding skills with other brands’ level 0 (preemie, etc.)
- The Level 1 flow rate measures 11.3 mL/min with a .03 coefficient of variation (“cv”).
- exclusively breastfed babies older than 3 months
- exclusively breastfed babies under 3 months who have adapted to a heavy let-down
- babies who have established feeding skills with other brands’ level 1 or equivalent (slow flow, etc.)
- babies who have previously adapted to mōmi’s Level 1 and who have graduated to needing a faster flow rate, typically 3 months or older
- Level 2 has a flow rate of 20.8 mL/min with a .04 cv.
- babies who have established feeding skills with other brands’ level 2 or equivalent (medium flow, etc.), typically 6 months or older
- babies who have previously adapted to mōmi’s Level 2 and who have graduated to needing a faster flow rate, typically 6 months or older

Note : flow rate measured after use of duct cleaning tool to reflect real-world use environment.
Even though mōmi flow rates measured on a mL/min basis correspond to the flow rates of other leading brands, babies who have become accustomed to the oral mechanics of conventional hollow compression nipples tend to do better with a faster flow rate mōmi nipple to avoid frustration while learning to transfer breastfeeding oral mechanics to bottle feeding.
what’s new with babypace® 2
After launching the original mōmi babypace® nipple in early 2023, we did a lot of listening. Many professionals (IBCLCs, SLPs, OTs, and others) found it as a useful tool in their work with helping families feed their babies. And many gave us good ideas on how to make the mōmi nipple better.
We collaborated closely with a group of professionals over the course of many months in the development of our new design. Our collaboration group included both professionals who were advocates and champions of the original design, and those who had chosen not to use the original design. The primary changes are:
- Geometry. Reshaped to encourage a deeper, more natural latch.
- Softness. The original design was soft only in the tip and had a harder silicone base. The new design is soft and stretchy throughout.
- Flow rates. With a focus on precision, beginning with a Level 1 flow rate optimized for most breastfed babies at the point of initial bottle introduction. We also offer a Level 2 for older babies with well established feeding skills. We are working on additional flow rates to address a wider range of needs.
- Vents. The original design suffered from occasional vent failure - either leaking, or not activating to allow air into the bottle. The vent system has been redesigned for reliable, consistent performance.
- Drip. The original design dripped more than most conventional bottle nipples of comparable flow rates. We reengineered the duct to reduce dripping to a minimum, especially with the slower flow rates.
We made other improvements and tweaks to the system (the cap is now more easily removed, the graduation markings are more precise, etc.) and we will continue to improve and expand our offerings.
We have also been able to reduce our manufacturing costs, which allows us to reduce retail prices on our multi-bottle sets.
What hasn’t changed: mōmi’s patented compression shutoff, which requires the baby to use both similar effort and similar function to that used in breastfeeding. It’s this unique feature that, according to many lactation professionals who use mōmi with their families, enables mōmi uniquely to help establish, restore, strengthen, and preserve breastfeeding.
